Breastfeeding a baby is not always easy. Advice and information are
crucial, but sometimes you just need support, understanding and a window
into the day-to-day (and night-to-night!) reality of nursing and nurturing
your children. Maybe you're expecting your first child and have never nursed
before. Maybe you have a newborn and never realized that breastfeeding
doesn't always come easily. Maybe you're nursing a two year old but
don't feel a lot of support from those around you. Or maybe you're
just finding the whole experience to be something to be overwhelming - in
ways both wonderful and challenging.
Breastfeeding affects
our mothering, our family relationships, our identities as women, mothers,
and lovers, and our physical and emotional well-being. Yet at
the same time,
most of us living in the
United States - and in many other western countries, as well - discover that
our experiences and perceptions are influenced by a culture that often makes
it difficult to establish and maintain a satisfying nursing relationship.
If you're lucky, you
feel supported and appreciated. But if you don't, you're not alone.
Overall, there is a lack of public understanding that breastfeeding involves
more than nutrition, immunology and health, but is also about comfort,
security and connection.
The Breastfeeding
Cafe's Parents' Lounge is - I hope - a place where you can find some of the
support and information you need.
